To create a beautiful fall leaf garland with your kids, you'll need a few supplies:
Grab your little adventurers and head outdoors to collect some vibrant fall leaves. Encourage them to find leaves of different shapes, sizes, and colors. It's like a treasure hunt! If you want to add some education to the adventure, we recommend this Growing Up Wild, Looking at Leaves activity.
If you want to add a personal touch to your garland, let the kids get creative with markers or paint. First, rinse and pat the leaves dry. Once dry, they can draw fun designs, write messages, or even make leaf monsters!
While the leaves are drying (or the kids are decorating) start your double boiler. Add water to the pot and bring to a gentle boil. Place a metal or glass bowl with solid bees wax, on top of the boiling water and stir until melted. Let the water simmer to keep the wax from solidifying. Next, lay out your parchment paper.
Once the bees wax is melted, begin dipping the leaves into the wax being sure to coat both sides. Place on the parchment paper to harden. *Please make good judgment about if your child is ready to help with this part of the activity*
Take a long piece of twine or string and either thread it through the holes in the leaves that you've punched using a hole punch, or tie onto each stem. You can alternate colors or create a pattern. Let the kids take turns adding their favorite leaves.
Find the perfect spot to display your DIY fall leaf garland. It could be on a mantel, across a window, or even outside on a porch. Admire your creation and let the autumn vibes fill your home!
Remember, this activity is all about having fun and getting creative with your little ones. Embrace the messiness and let their imaginations run wild. Happy leaf garland making!

We chose to use cloth diapers because I was concerned about all of the waste that would be produced if we used disposable diapers. Now that we have been cloth diapering for almost two years, here are my top three favorite benefits:
Salem Cloth Project sells reusable products so that we can purchase cloth diapers and provide them to families in need. But we are also your cloth diapering resource. If you have questions about getting started or trouble shooting along the way, we would love to help! Reach out through social media or contact us at salemclothproject@gmail.com.
What weighs 1.7 million pounds, is wrapped in plastic and smells like crap? **Drum roll** The amount of disposable diapers that are thrown away in Marion County, Oregon every month. Yes, you read that right. 1.7 million pounds a month of disposable diapers are thrown away in Marion County according to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality waste assessment data from 2016.
If you are a parent or if you’ve ever wandered past the diaper aisle in the grocery store, you also know that diapers are not cheap. In fact, a single-child household could spend around $50 a month on diapers. And depending on how quickly your child potty trains, you could be spending that for 2-4 years! That could be $2,400 on diapers alone before a child is potty trained.
The goal of Salem Cloth Project is not only to reduce waste, but to help families in need to reduce the financial burden associated with purchasing disposable diapers. For many families in our community $50/month could mean the difference between dinner and diapers. SCP wants to insure no family has to face that dilemma.
SCP hand makes and sells reusable products and uses a portion of their proceeds to support our mission by purchasing cloth diapers for families in need. But in order to help more people, SCP has partnered with the non-profit Salem Environment Education (SEE) to apply for a grant through the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Materials Management program. And last week, DEQ announced that SCP and SEE was one of seventeen organizations to receive grant funding.
Over the course of the next year, SCP and SEE will receive $15,070 from DEQ. Here is what those funds will support:
This project has the potential to eliminate thousands of pounds of disposable diaper waste and support local families at the same time. This will be a HUGE undertaking – but we are ready for the challenge!
